Manchester United boss David Moyes is unable to offer any update on Wayne Rooney being fit for Wednesday's Champions League clash against Bayern Munich, but is hopeful the England international will be ready.

Rooney is suffering with a badly bruised toe and missed his side's 4-0 win at Newcastle United earlier today.

The Red Devils head into the second leg with the tie delicately poised at 1-1 – and Rooney being fit would be a big, big boost.

Asked for an update on Rooney's fitness by the BBC, Moyes explained: "I couldn't tell you.

"I've not spoken to the medical staff who've been working with him at the training ground.

"But we're all hoping that he can make it [for Bayern Munich]."

Manchester United were inspired to their 4-0 win against Newcastle by Juan Mata today, but the Spaniard is ineligible to play in the Champions League for the Red Devils.
