Arsene Wenger has admitted that he held talks at his house with Eden Hazard's agent in a bid to attract the Belgian to the Emirates Stadium, but was outbid by Chelsea.

Wenger had wanted to scoop Hazard up for Arsenal when the attacking midfielder was at French club Lille. However, it was Chelsea who won the race for the talent in the summer of 2012, paying Lille a fee of €40m and handing Hazard a lucrative contract.

But Wenger did try hard to snaffle up the Belgian, being quoted as saying by Voetbal Primeur: "Yes, I wanted to sign Hazard.

"His agent was at my house to visit, but finances were a major obstacle.

"Chelsea made him an offer that I could not make."

And Wenger feels Hazard has continued to develop since his switch to Stamford Bridge, even putting the player within reach of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

"Hazard is one of the players who can converge at the level of Messi and Ronaldo if he continues developing well", the Arsenal boss added.

Hazard's future at Chelsea has been in some doubt of late, with boss Jose Mourinho accusing him of not being willing to sacrifice himself for the team.
