Napoli coach Rafael Benitez has instructed the club's sporting director Ricardo Bigon to secure a centre-back this coming summer, with Liverpool's Daniel Agger and Tottenham's Jan Vertonghen on the club's shortlist.

The Serie A side have long been in the market for a new defender and Benitez feels it is now a priority signing ahead of the club competing in the Champions League next season.

A whole host of familiar names have been drawn up on Benitez and Bigon's shortlist, according to Tuttosport.

Those who Benitez would welcome to the club include Liverpool's Agger, Tottenham's Vertonghen, Arsenal's Thomas Vermaelen, Marseille's Nicolas N'Koulou and Benfica'z Ezequiel Garay.

Central defence has been a problem position for Napoli this season, with Benitez unhappy at the weak spot in his team.

Napoli have conceded 13 goals more than the two sides above them in Serie A this season, Roma and Juventus.

The Azzurri are also set to offload Uruguayan defender Miguel Britos in the summer.
