Liverpool custodian Simon Mignolet wants his side to build on their impressive season and challenge for the Premier League title next term.

The Reds came desperately close to ending their 24-year wait for the domestic league title, but poor results against Chelsea and Crystal Palace during the fag-end of the campaign derailed their title charge.

The Merseyside giants, who ended their season with a 2-1 win over Newcastle United yesterday, finished in second spot with 84 points from 38 games, just two fewer than champions Manchester City.

However, Mignolet insisted that it has been a great season for Liverpool, who came a long way from their disappointing seventh-place finish in the 2012/13 campaign.

The Belgium international was also pleased with his side for attaining their objective of securing Champions League football next season.

"Before this game, we had already secured Champions League [qualification] – that was the objective at the beginning of the season. We managed to get that,” Mignolet explained to his club’s official site.

"But fighting until the last day for the Premier League, we wanted to win it. You have to take into account where we came from and what we have achieved this year is amazing.

"So we can build on that next season and we can start on a high. There is belief now and we can start in a good way next season, and try again to compete for the Premier League."
