Southampton midfielder Adam Lallana has expressed his disappointment at Ashley Cole's omission from England's 23-member World Cup squad.

The Chelsea left-back was left out by manager Roy Hodgson in favour of Saints star Luke Shaw, to inject more youth into the group.

Lallana believes that the inclusion of players like Shaw, Raheem Sterling and other youngsters is good for the squad, but adds that he would have preferred to see Cole included too.

"There are a lot of young players in there like Shawy, Sterling, [Alex Oxlade-]Chamberlain and a couple on the standby list as well", the 26-year-old told his club's official site.

"That’s good for English football.

“To be out there with Lukey [Shaw] and Lambo [Rickie Lambert], my two team-mates, is so special. I hope we’ll flourish off each other."

As far as Cole's exclusion is concerned, Lallana added:"I am obviously disappointed for Ashley Cole.

"I was there to witness how he put his arm around Luke and help him in training during the week leading up to his debut."

Cole has played 17 league matches for the Pensioners this season and has provided his team-mates with two important assists.
