FC Groningen are sending starlet Krisztian Adorjan back to Liverpool after choosing not to sign him on a permanent basis.

The Eredivisie side had snapped up the Hungarian on loan from the Reds and their agreement contained a purchase option, which they had until the middle of May to activate.

However, following talks between club and player, Adorjan will return to Anfield.

Groningen technical manager Henk Veldmate said in a statement: "From both sides it was not fully what we expect. Of course Adorjan has a particular role and development which was expected and he himself had certain expectations.

"We arrived at the view that with the agreement with Liverpool we were at the point where we had to take a decision for the future and we came to the conclusion that it would be better to go our own way."

The attacking midfielder clocked up 21 appearances for Groningen, scoring three times.
