Barcelona defender Carles Puyol has thanked the club and their fans for extending their "unconditional support" during his stay at the club.

The Spaniard has bid farewell to football at the age of 36 after finding his chances limited due to injury.

In fact Puyol has managed only five league appearances this season, after suffering from recurrent knee injuries.

“I want to say thanks to the fans for the unconditional support they’ve shown me", Puyol said during a press conference.

“I would never have thought then that I would have this great career.

"I’ve lived the dream of so many young kids, doing what I most enjoy in life, playing football and training.

"I’ve won lots of titles but the most important thing is the human warmth and feeling I take from this club.

"I came here as a boy and I’m leaving with a family who I’m really proud of."

Puyol has played a total of 392 matches for Barcelona during his 15 years at club and has 12 goals against his name.
