Current Monaco coach Claudio Ranieri is a surprise contender to take over as Lyon boss.

Ranieri is on the brink of being replaced as Monaco coach, despite having led the club to promotion from Ligue 2 last season and then to second place in Ligue 1 this term.

The principality club are believed to have an agreement with Sporting Lisbon boss Leonardo Jardim.

However, that may not mean Ranieri is finished in French football.

According to L'Equipe, the former Inter coach is being considered as a potential new Lyon boss.

Current Lyon coach Remi Garde is standing down, having led Les Gones to a finish of fifth in Ligue 1.

Ranieri's Monaco finished their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Bordeaux last night, while Lyon won 1-0 at Nice.
