Robin van Persie has paid tribute to his first club in football, Excelsior, after they secured promotion back to the Eredivisie.

Excelsior found themselves relegated in the 2011/12 campaign, finishing bottom of the Eredivisie with just 19 points from 34 games.

However, this term they have come through the promotion playoffs, beating RKC Waalwijk 4-2 on aggregate over two legs to seal a top flight return.

Manchester United striker Van Persie, who started his career at the club in 1997, is delighted.

"Congratulations to Excelsior", he tweeted.

"Back in the Eredivisie! Great job guys!"

Van Persie remained with Excelsior, who have operated as a feeder club for Feyenoord, until taking the step up to Feyenoord's senior ranks in 2001.
