Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward believes the club have secured an "outstanding" manager after they confirmed the appointment of Louis van Gaal.

The Red Devils have appointed Van Gaal on a three-year contract, with the Dutchman due to land at Old Trafford following the conclusion of Holland's World Cup campaign this summer.

Ryan Giggs will serve as Van Gaal's assistant, while the current Holland boss is bringing Frans Hoek and Marcel Bout with him.

Woodward told the club's site: "In Louis van Gaal, we have secured the services of one of the outstanding managers in the game today.
