Uruguay fans have been sending online death threats to Newcastle United defender Paul Dummett, blaming him for Luis Suarez’s knee injury, according to the BBC.

The Liverpool star underwent surgery on Wednesday and, though Uruguay have insisted they expect him to be fit for the World Cup, doubts still linger.

Dummett has been targeted by Uruguay supporters on Twitter for a challenge on Suarez in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Newcastle in their final Premier League game of the season earlier in the month.

Although it is not certain that Dummett’s tackle caused the injury, Suarez complained of pain at the start of Uruguay's training camp this week.

The Magpies defender was given his marching orders for the clumsy tackle at Anfield, but his red card was later overturned.

Uruguay, who are placed in Group D along with Costa Rica and former champions England and Italy, will begin their World Cup campaign with a game against the Central American nation on 14th June.
