Stoke City have released winger Matthew Etherington, while handing a new contract to goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen.

Etherington joined the Potters from West Ham United in January 2009 and clocked up 177 appearances for the Britannia Stadium outfit.

The 32-year-old won the Player of the Year award at the club in his first full season, but has slipped out of the first team picture.

Indeed, Etherington made only five starts this season under Mark Hughes.

However, while Etherington heads out of the door, goalkeeper Sorensen will be staying put.

The 37-year-old said via his Twitter account: "Really happy to have agreed a new one year deal with Stoke City. Great club, great fans and exciting times ahead."
