Iker Casillas believes Real Madrid were the “deserved winners” of the Champions League after his side defeated Atletico Madrid 4-1 in the final on Saturday.

The Rojiblancos took the lead in the 36th minute in Lisbon when Casillas was caught in no man’s land while rushing out to clear a corner, and Diego Godin headed into an open net.

Real Madrid were shocked after conceding and it took Los Blancos until the third minute of injury time to score the equaliser.

Sergio Ramos’ bullet header from a corner took the game into extra-time where Gareth Bale, Marcelo and Cristiano scored in the second period to hand Real Madrid their tenth Champions League title.

And Casillas, who admitted that his side’s confidence was down after Atletico Madrid’s opener, felt Real Madrid were “superior” to their fierce local rivals in extra-time.

“The goal we conceded was an absurd goal,” the custodian told UEFA’s official site.

“It brought us down a bit, because as a team you feel very responsible for it, and you see that the team, as much as you want them to, doesn't respond.

“But that's football, and in the 90th minute, in injury time [Madrid equalised]. In the end, the [equaliser] was a fair result, and it took us into extra time.

“Madrid were hurting physically in that extra time, but I also think we were superior to Atletico Madrid. In the end [we] are the deserved winners of this European trophy.”
