AS Roma are already looking at replacements for Mehdi Benatia and have identified Dejan Lovren as a potential transfer target for the summer.

Benatia’s performance for the Giallorossi last season has attracted interest from clubs across Europe and Roma are becoming impatient with the Moroccan’s indecision about his future in Rome.

The Romans would ideally like to keep the 27-year-old beyond the summer but if Benatia wants a move, they would like to sell him early to move quickly to replace him, according to Il Messaggero.

The Moroccan is a target for Chelsea, who are looking to replace the departing David Luiz and Manchester United also want an experienced central defender to fill the gap left by Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

Roma are keeping a close eye on Croatian international Lovren and they believe that if they have to sell Benatia, they would have enough in the transfer kitty to meet Southampton’s demands for the 24-year-old.

Lovren joined the Saints from Lyon last summer for a transfer fee of £8.5m and a contract until 2017 gives Southampton the chance to dictate proceedings in any transfer dealing this summer.
