Former Chelsea centre-back Ricardo Carvalho has signed a new one-year extension with French club AS Monaco.

The Portuguese defender joined Monaco from Real Madrid last summer on a one-year contract and made 40 appearances for the club last season.

Monaco finished second in the league behind French champions Paris Saint-Germain and his performances have been rewarded with a contract extension.

A Monaco statement read: “AS Monaco are pleased to announce the contract extension of an additional year for R. Carvalho.”

The Ligue 1 side sacked Claudio Ranieri and appointed Leonardo Jardim as their new manager this summer and he will require the experience of Carvalho in the squad next season.
