Louis van Gaal has confirmed that young defender Paddy McNair will keep his spot for Manchester United against Everton at Old Trafford on Sunday.

McNair made his senior debut for the Red Devils last weekend against West Ham and helped Van Gaal's men claim a 2-1 victory with a game-saving header to prevent a Hammers goal.

And with defensive injury problems continuing at Manchester United, Van Gaal will again give McNair a role in the heart of the defence.

The Dutchman explained to a press conference this afternoon: "We still have three central defenders injured so he shall play.

"He is the only player who can play in the right-sided defensive position.

"I chose him last week and he played very well. It's difficult for a player like him to maintain that level – that is his biggest challenge", the Dutchman added.

McNair was widely praised for his performance for Manchester United against West Ham, the youngster even being preferred to reserve team captain Tom Thorpe.

The Red Devils will be without Wayne Rooney when they face the Toffees, the striker having been sent off against West Ham.
