Aston Villa owner Randy Lerner says that the club worked extremely hard to convince Tim Sherwood to take over as manager.

Sherwood has been appointed to the manager's post at Villa Park on a contract running until the summer of 2018.

The former Tottenham Hotspur boss replaces the sacked Paul Lambert at the helm of the Premier League side, who recently slipped into the relegation zone, something which forced Lerner to act.

The American owner has now stressed just how hard Villa worked to put Sherwood in place, paying particular tribute to CEO Tom Fox.

Lerner told his club's site: "While being forever conscious of the frustrations that we all suffer, we feel that a change that offers a positive, fresh approach will be very good for the club.

"I know that Tom and many others at Villa worked very hard to recruit Tim in the face of severely limited time constraints and pounding pressure.

"More importantly, I know further that internally we remain focused and committed to challenges we face, and I am deeply appreciative for that", Lerner added.

Lerner is currently attempting to sell Aston Villa, though has found tempting a buyer difficult.

The American will now hope that Sherwood can steer the Midlands giants to safety this season, while also improving on the club's goal return, which reached historic lows under Lambert.

Aston Villa next play tomorrow, when they take on Leicester City in an FA Cup tie at Villa Park.
