Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin has sprinted ahead of Theo Walcott to become the fastest player in the Gunners’ squad.

Bellerin, who started his football education at Barcelona’s famed La Masia youth academy, arrived at Arsenal in the summer of 2011.

The 19-year-old has enjoyed a loan spell at Watford in the past, but he has seen more first team opportunities in the current season and has made nine Premier League appearances thus far. He also made his Champions League debut in the current campaign when he played the full 90 minutes against Borussia Dortmund in September last year.

According to results of training drills at the Emirates Stadium, Bellerin has emerged as the fastest Gunner, leaving behind the previous record holder Walcott over 40 metres.

“There are some people who are just born quick and some people that are born slower", Bellerin told the club’s official site.

The Catalan believes that the work he did in training under Arsenal’s conditioning coach has yielded positive results and helped him become faster.

“But I worked a lot on my speed and power with the conditioning coach last year – that's something which has helped me a lot.

“The work that you don't see, in the shadows, really shows on the pitch. My time over 40 metres was the fastest.”

However, Bellerin acknowledged that he didn’t expect to be the fastest at the club and insisted that the results of the tests did surprise him.

“It's something I didn't expect – we were just having a test and then they told me I was the fastest at the club.”
