England boss Roy Hodgson has been impressed by the work carried out by Louis van Gaal at Manchester United this season and believes the team are constantly improving under the stewardship of the Dutchman.

Though the former Bayern Munich and Barcelona coach is on course to secure Champions League qualification this season and his side have been beaten just once in their last 15 league games, the Red Devils have come under fire for their performance levels and style of football this season.

Van Gaal’s Manchester United have been accused of playing sterile possession-based football, which has led to them creating limited goalscoring opportunities in spite of having abundance of attacking talent.

However, the former Barcelona boss has received support from the England manager and Hodgson stressed that the Manchester United players are consistently improving under the stewardship of the Dutchman.

“It seems the longer Van Gaal is working with the players, the more they are improving their football”, the England boss told the BBC.

Though Rooney played up front last night against Preston North End in a 3-1 FA Cup win for Manchester United, Van Gaal has come in for criticism for too often using one of England’s elite goalscorer as a midfielder this season.

However, Hodgson believes the England captain has done well and has improved his performance in other areas of the pitch.

“It’s amazing how well he has been performing in different positions”, the England manager said.
