Former Manchester United first team coach Phil Neville has revealed that the Red Devils wanted to sign Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Blaise Matuidi during his time at the club last year.

Neville worked under former Manchester United manager David Moyes, who was sacked in April last year. The coach saw out the season with the Red Devils, but left in the summer and now works as a media pundit.

He was taking in Chelsea's Champions League game against Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes this evening and let slip that the Red Devils wanted the French side's midfielder Blaise Matuidi.

Neville explained that the Old Trafford outfit were alerted to Matuidi's expiring contract last year. He said on BBC Radio 5 live: "Yes we did [scout him].

"Our reports were that we wanted to sign him.

"We'd heard that his contract at Paris Saint-Germain was maybe running out and we were really interested in him.

"Then he signed a contract with Paris Saint-Germain, which was not something we were happy with.

"We were looking at him to inject a bit of energy."

Matuidi played all 90 minutes this evening as PSG drew 1-1 with Chelsea at the Parc des Princes, turning in an impressive performance for Laurent Blanc's men.

The 27-year-old has made 23 appearances in Ligue 1 for PSG so far this season, along with featuring in all the club's Champions League matches to date.
