Chelsea captain John Terry is eager to extend his stay at Stamford Bridge and has made it known that he wants to sign a fresh contract with the Blues.

Terry’s existing contract was extended for 12 months last season and it will end at the conclusion of the current season.

The defender made his first Premier League appearance for the Blues in 1998 and has since then gone on to play over 600 matches for the Stamford Bridge-based outfit.

The former England international has captained Chelsea through the most successful period in their history. Since being appointed the first team skipper in the 2004/05 season, Terry has won three Premier League titles, four FA Cups and the Champions League in 2012.

Regarding his desire to stay at the club, Terry has made it clear that he intends to prolong his career at Chelsea.

“The club know my position, I want to stay”, he was quoted as saying by the BBC.

Now 34, the defender has enjoyed a formidable campaign so far having played every minute of Chelsea’s 25 Premier League matches as they sit atop the table, seven points ahead of their nearest rivals Manchester City.

He believes that his performances this season merit a contract renewal.

“Hopefully my performances are showing that and they can keep me.”

Last year, long-serving Chelsea players Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard were allowed to leave the club at the expiration of their contracts, but Terry hopes he gets a year’s extension.

“I'll be happy to get one year and then see how it goes. I'm taking it year by year. I haven't got much choice.”
