Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho says that John Terry has risen to the challenge of earning a new contract at the club.

Terry signed a one-year contract extension at Stamford Bridge last summer and recently stated his desire to pen an extension to secure his future with the Blues.

Chelsea have a policy of offering players over a certain age only year-long contract extensions, with Mourinho saying they need to rise to the challenge of winning an extension.

And the Portuguese believes that Terry has met the challenge head on and as a result will, at some point, be offered a new contract.

He told a press conference: "I think everybody wants to stay and especially him as he's been here for all his life.

"I think he accepted our policy of after a certain age to go year after year and John accepted that with a smile and won the challenge last year by getting a one-year extension.

"This year he is also winning the challenge and is getting a one-year extension.

"That is what he wants, the club wants and what is going to happen.

"Sooner or later he will get the season contract he deserves", Mourinho added.

Terry has been a regular fixture in the heart of the Chelsea defence this season, with Mourinho instead rotating his defensive partner between Gary Cahill and Kurt Zouma.

The veteran centre-back has already witnessed former team-mates Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard leave Stamford Bridge and is determined not to follow suit.
