Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger admits that he was worried about who they would face in the last 16 of the Champions League after his side finished second in their group.

The first knockout round of the competition has been an Achilles’ heels for Arsenal and they have exited the Champions League in the round for the last four seasons.

They finished second in their group behind Borussia Dortmund and were facing the prospect of taking on the likes of Bayern Munich or Barcelona again.

However, they will take on Monaco, believed by many to be the weakest group winners. Wenger admits that given their record in the last 16 over the last few years, he was concerned about their potential opponents after they finished second in their group.

Though he stressed that he is not expecting an easy ride against the Ligue 1 side, the Frenchman is confident that if they can perform according to their level, Arsenal will qualify for the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

“It was [a concern], yes!”, Wenger told UEFA.

“We were always in difficult groups, and this year we were level on points with Dortmund, but finished second in the group.

“It was a big concern, because we [previously] got Bayern, Barcelona, AC Milan, with the second game obviously away.

“But this time I think it's 50-50 and that means we have a chance.

"It will be down to the quality of our performance.”
