Celtic defender-cum-midfielder Charlie Mulgrew believes that competition for a place in Ronny Deila’s squad is good for the team as it pushes everyone to give their best.
Mulgrew has been sidelined after suffering a knee injury at the start of December and he is now nearing a return to training after making a full recovery.
The 28-year-old had been a constant presence in the Hoops’ midfield alongside Scott Brown. In his absence Nir Bitton has impressed with his assured performances alongside the club captain, thereby making Mulgrew fight for a return to the first team.
However, the Scotland international is unfazed by the competition within the squad and insists that it is the hallmark of a good team.
“It’s going to be difficult but that’s what makes a good team”, Mulgrew told the club site.

“Everybody wants that and it’s the same with Scotland – a lot of competition. It pushes everybody on and makes them better players.
“Everyone welcomes it and there isn’t a player who doesn’t want it because that gives everyone the motivation they need to push on"
Mulgrew was effusive in his praise of Israeli schemer Bitton and added that the Israel international has done a great job in his absence.
“Nir is a good player and has done really well. I have been watching him particularly closely as that is the position I have been playing. He has done a great job and long may it continue.”
Celtic sit atop the Scottish Premiership table, three points ahead of their nearest rivals Aberdeen. Deila’s men look on course to secure their fourth successive league title.
