Leeds United boss Neil Redfearn feels his players must not take their foot off the gas in the Championship just yet, warning that a side that believe they are safe often end up getting dragged into the relegation scrap.

A good run of form from the Whites in recent months has seen them surge to 13 points clear of the drop zone, leading Redfearn to openly discuss his side's prospects for next term.

Leeds face the team sitting third from bottom, in the form of Wigan Athletic, at the DW Stadium later today and the Latics will be keen to beat the Whites, not just for the importance of gaining three points, but also to cut the gap between the two teams to ten points.

And Redfearn is aware that this afternoon's match is an important clash for both teams.

He told LUTV: "There's going to be somebody that thinks they are safe that's going to get sucked into it.

"That happens every year.

"So it's an important game. We've got to make sure that we finish the season right and as high as we can.

"I feel we can take a good run into the beginning of next season, which is important for the club.

"The lads are playing with confidence and you want to keep that confidence for them."

Wigan have seen their form pick up in recent games, with wins away at Blackpool and Norwich handing them fresh hope of surviving in the Championship. A third consecutive victory against Leeds today would boost Malky Mackay's men still further.
