Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has backed forward Harry Kane to be in contention for the Player of the Year awards.

For a player who made his first league start this season in November, Kane is having a remarkable season in front of the goal. He has scored 29 goals in all competitions for Tottenham and has often been the difference between them winning and losing points.

He scored the fastest debut goal for England since the Second World War against Lithuania last week and garnered praise for his graft against Italy earlier this week.

The Tottenham boss is taken aback by the pace at which Kane has risen to prominence this season, but added that such things often happen in football and believes that the striker deserves every ounce of the praise that he is getting today.

“Everything has happened very quickly for him, but in football everything can turn quickly, both for the good and the bad”, Pochettino said in a press conference.

“He deserves [the praise] and I am pleased for him.”

The queries surrounding the in-form forward inevitably moved towards the Player of the Year awards and when asked whether Kane should be in contention for the accolade, the Tottenham boss said: “I don’t know we need to wait for the vote, but yes, why not?”

When asked whether he will vote for the 21-year-old, Pochettino chuckled and said: “I don’t know; maybe.”

Kane will be hoping to add the 30th goal of his season when Tottenham travel to Burnley on Sunday.
