Manchester United defender Phil Jones hopes that his team continue on their current winning run when they play derby rivals Manchester City in their next league fixture on Sunday.

Louis van Gaal’s men have hit a purple patch, having won their last five Premier League matches which has propelled them to third spot in the table and made them strong favourites to finish among the top four this seasson, and thereby make a return to the Champions League after a year’s absence.

Manchester City, on the other hand, have endured a torrid time since the turn of the year. And following their loss to Crystal Palace last night, the Citizens have slipped to fourth in the Premier League and are susceptible to falling further down the table.

In the prevailing circumstances the Red Devils will be confident when they host the reigning English champions at Old Trafford this Sunday, but Jones feels that Manuel Pellegrini’s men are still a force to be reckoned with and nothing can be taken for granted in the derby.

“Victory doesn't last long enough”, he told MUTV.

“We've got to move on the next game. It's nice to go into the derby, such a big game, playing well and in form. We need to turn up and make sure we put on another great performance next Sunday.

“City are still a good team.

“We know what they're capable of and the threat they have going forward. They've got some great players in their squad but so have we.

“We've seen in the last few weeks and all season really, what sort of team we can be when we turn up and play our football. Hopefully, we can do that on Sunday as well."
