Former Liverpool forward Luis Suarez has revealed that Real Madrid were interested in him before he joined Barcelona last summer.

Barcelona paid a club record transfer fee of €94m last summer to sign the Uruguayan superstar from Liverpool.

However, talk of Real Madrid’s interest in Suarez was also doing the rounds before Barcelona eventually snapped up the player from the north west of England.

Suarez has given credibility to the speculation and revealed that Los Blancos were indeed trying to sign him before he made his big move to the Nou Camp at the end of the last season.

However, he added once Barcelona entered the race, other clubs’ interest in him became immaterial as it was his dream to play for the Blaugrana.

“Real Madrid were very interested in me, but my dream was always to play for Barca”, Suarez told Cadena COPE.

“When I heard the name 'Barcelona', I didn't hesitate for a moment."

When asked would he have ever contemplated playing for Real Madrid, Suarez said: “You never know what will happen in football, but luck would have it that Barca knocked on my door, and that was the club I wanted.

“It was a dream that I had had for many years and it came true.”

After a difficult start to his career at the Nou Camp, Suarez has flourished over the last few months and has formed a deadly attacking combination with Lionel Messi and Neymar.

He has scored 16 goals in all competitions for Barcelona this season.
