Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar believes that it is essential Petr Cech leaves Chelsea to join another club this summer.

Cech has been dislodged between the sticks by Thibaut Courtois this season, with the Belgian having relegated the veteran Czech custodian to the substitutes' bench at Stamford Bridge.

The 32-year-old has been linked with a number of clubs, including Arsenal and Liverpool, but stayed put at Chelsea throughout the winter transfer window, much to Jose Mourinho's delight.

He is expected to leave Chelsea in search of regular first team football this summer and Van der Sar believes it is essential Cech moves on to a club at which he can play week in, week out.

Speaking about Courtois and David de Gea excelling this season, Van der Sar said via Manchester United's site: "Those guys really do their job although I have a lot of respect for Petr Cech from my time when he played with Chelsea.
