Arsene Wenger has criticised his side's defensive performance in their 5-1 drubbing by Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena in the Champions League this evening.

Arsenal were behind after just eleven minutes when an unmarked Robert Lewandowski headed the ball into the back of the net.

The Gunners thought they were level soon afterwards, but Mesut Ozil saw his goal ruled out for handball, while Bayern Munich then doubled their lead in the 29th minute through Thomas Muller.

It was 3-0 on the stroke of half time when David Alaba surged forward and hit a neat looping shot which sailed past Petr Cech.

Substitute Arjen Robben lashed home Bayern Munich's fourth within seconds of coming on in the 55th minute, though Arsenal did pull one back in the 69th minute through Olivier Giroud.

But it was Bayern Munich's night and Muller grabbed his second of the game in injury time to complete a 5-1 drubbing.

For Wenger, while Bayern Munich deserve credit, Arsenal were well below where they needed to be defensively.

He told his post-match press conference: "You have to give credit to Bayern for their quality, but we made things easy for them.

"We were extremely poor defensively."

Wenger will not give up on reaching the knockout round though, adding: "There is still a chance to qualify. It's a small chance, but there is still a real one."
