Liverpool's board contacted Jose Mourinho about succeeding Brendan Rodgers at Anfield, it has been claimed.

Rodgers was sacked after the Merseyside derby against Everton on 4th October and replaced with former Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp, whose first game in charge came away at Tottenham Hotspur, a 0-0 draw, on 17th October.

However, according to French magazine Le 10 Sport, Liverpool initially contacted Mourinho and made it clear that if the Portuguese resigned his post at Stamford Bridge they would be happy to appoint him to succeed Rodgers.

Mourinho, who went on record while at FC Porto about his admiration for Liverpool and wish to manage the club, is in the midst of a season of struggle with Chelsea.

Liverpool, it is claimed, spied a potential opportunity and thought Mourinho may consider a fresh start at Anfield – but the Portuguese refused to resign from his job at Chelsea. However, Mourinho was tempted by the idea of taking over at Liverpool.
