Leeds United striker Chris Wood wants to be a role model for the youngsters in the New Zealand squad over the ongoing international break.

Wood is set to captain New Zealand in a friendly against Oman in Muscat this coming Friday, taking the armband in the absence of West Ham defender Winston Reid.

Despite being just 23 years old, Wood already has significant international experience and believes he must lead by example.

He was quoted as saying by his club's site: "I'd like to think that even if I'm not leading the side my game would still be very high, but it gives that added pressure of having to be that focal point, especially up front.

"Leading the side out is a huge honour every single time and it's an honour putting on that jersey every single time. I'll definitely give it my all as always and I'll lead from the front", Wood continued.

"I've been around for a while now in the All Whites so I'll have to bring what I know into camp and be a role model for some of the youngsters that are coming through."

Wood is currently Leeds' top goalscorer this season after hitting the back of the net on six occasions for the Whites, the latest being during his side's 3-0 win over local rivals Huddersfield Town at the weekend.

Leeds splashed out £3m to sign the New Zealand international from Leicester City in the summer, beating off competition from a number of other Championship clubs to bag his signature.
