Carlo Ancelotti has backed Jose Mourinho to arrest the slump at Chelsea this season and feels the Blues have made the right decision to keep faith with the Portuguese.

Despite winning the Premier League title last term, Chelsea have slumped in the current campaign and sit only three points clear of the relegation zone after 12 games; the champions have lost seven league matches so far.

Mourinho has also had run-ins with the Football Association and served a one-match stadium ban for Chelsea's last match, a 1-0 defeat away at Stoke City.

Ancelotti, a former Chelsea manager, feels the Portuguese though remains the best man to turn the tide at Stamford Bridge.

He said on BBC Radio 5 live's Sportsweek programme: "Chelsea are used to competing at the top level.

"They have lost a little bit of confidence in their play and arrived at bad results. Slowly they can move on from this situation.

"Mourinho is the best person to manage this because he is the one involved.

"He knows the situation and the condition of the players and the club took the right decision to stay with Mourinho."

Ancelotti has been mooted as a possible successor to Mourinho if the Portuguese cannot turn Chelsea's season around.

The Italian, who managed Chelsea from 2009 until 2011, is a free agent following his sacking by Real Madrid in the summer.
