Celtic midfielder Stuart Armstrong has admitted that he is very disappointed to see his former team Dundee United struggling in the Scottish Premiership.

The 23-year-old joined Dundee United’s youth set-up from Inverness CT in 2009 and made his first team debut for the club the following year.

Armstrong scored 21 goals in 150 appearances in all competitions for the Terrors before joining Celtic in January 2015.

While the Hoops presently find themselves three points clear at the top of the table with a game in hand, the Scot’s former employers are rock bottom with just 14 points from 25 outings.

The Tannadice Park outfit took another step towards relegation on Tuesday, following their 3-0 loss against Motherwell.

And Armstrong, who acknowledged that Dundee United’s future is looking bleak in the Premiership, is however hopeful about the club soon returning to Scotland’s top tier if they are indeed relegated this season.

“Yes, it’s very sad to see”, Armstrong said in a pre-match press conference, when asked about his former team.

“I was hoping they would get a result on Tuesday night, but it wasn’t to be.

“Their future is not looking good in this league.

"But you have to remain optimistic and hope they can finish the league strongly and then if they do go down they come back up as soon as possible.”

Dundee United have managed to win just once in their last 12 league games, losing eight of those.
