Ex-Republic of Ireland international Andy Townsend has argued that Leeds United needed to adopt a more direct approach against Watford in the fifth round of the FA Cup at Vicarage Road, in a game they lost 1-0.

As per expectations, Watford dominated the match, had more of the ball, and had more attempts on goal but Leeds showed a resolute side to their game, which kept Watford at bay for long periods of time.

Going into the break at 0-0, the FA Cup tie was in the balance, but in a moment of horror for Steve Evans’ side everything changed as Scott Wootton made a comical error to find the back of his own net to give Watford the lead in the 53rd minute.

While Evans’ men worked hard to get back into the game, they lacked the cutting edge up front to trouble Watford and despite mounting some late pressure, the home side comfortably closed out the game to book a berth in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

The former Chelsea midfielder feels Leeds’ loss was not down to lack of effort, but believes they could have been more direct against the Hornets and at the end it was a comfortable win for Watford.

Townsend said on BBC Radio 5 live: "Leeds have not short-changed their manager or fans in terms of effort, but they could have been more direct. It's been quite comfortable for Watford.

"Watford deserved it, they rarely had to get out of third gear. No shock here, the better team won."

Leeds will be back in Championship action on Tuesday night when they host Fulham at Elland Road.
