Hibernian boss Alan Stubbs has insisted that his side are still well capable of closing an eight-point gap to Rangers at the top of the Scottish Championship, despite suffering a shock 3-0 home defeat to Morton last night.

Hibs, who are fighting for the Championship title with Rangers, lost their fourth league game of the season, courtesy of goals from Thomas O'Ware, Denny Johnstone and Ross Forbes at the Easter Road Stadium.

The defeat against Morton leaves an eight-point gap between second placed Hibernian and leaders Rangers.

Although Stubbs’ side managed to claw back the Gers’ lead of eight points earlier in the season, the 44-year-old admitted that it will be difficult this time with just 11 league games remaining.

However, the Englishman refused to completely rule out the possibility of Hibernian piping Rangers to the league title in the present campaign.

“It might be… it might not be”, Stubbs was quoted as saying by the Scotland Herald, when asked if the defeat effectively ended Hibs’ title bid.

“We’ve been eight points behind before and we managed to claw it back, but obviously with less games to go it does make it harder.

“It’s a blip for us but I can’t criticise the players too much because I’ve not been in this position too often this season.”

Hibernian will be looking to return to winning ways when they take on Dumbarton in an away league fixture on Saturday.
