Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has apologised to the Reds fans following the side's 3-1 defeat on penalties, after 120 minutes ended 1-1, in the League Cup final against Manchester City at Wembley.

The final was entertaining from the off, with Liverpool losing Mamadou Sakho early on due to a clash of heads with Emre Can; he was replaced by Kolo Toure.




Sergio Aguero came close to putting Manchester City ahead, but saw his shot tipped onto the post by Simon Mignolet.

In the second half, the Citizens went ahead within four minutes when Fernandinho squeezed an effort in from a tight angle.
 


As Liverpool searched for an equaliser, committing further men forward, Manchester City had chances to win it, with Raheem Sterling guilty of spurning his golden chances.

And Manchester City were made to pay when the ball found Philippe Coutinho in the penalty area and he put the ball past Willy Caballero.

Extra time came and both sides quickly started to look out of legs.

It went to penalties, where Liverpool put in a poor performance, with Lucas Leiva, Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana all missing, allowing Manchester City to win 3-1.

Henderson, disappointed, was quick to apologise to the Liverpool fans, but believes his side did all they could.

"Sorry for not winning the game", he said on LFC TV.

"Everyone is very disappointed, but at the same time I am very proud of all my team-mates because I felt as though we gave everything and that is all you can ask of footballers.

"In the end to lose on penalties is bitterly disappointing, but somebody has got to win."
