Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld feels their defensive solidity this season has been down to the entire team working hard, including the attack.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men could go top of the Premier League tonight with a win over West Ham at Upton Park, and their defensive strength has been one of the cornerstones of the Spurs team.

Tottenham have the meanest defensive record in the league at the moment with just 21 goals conceded from 27 games, and Alderweireld has been one of the steadiest centre backs in the Premier League.

However, the Spurs defender insisted that their defensive strength is down to the hard work of the entire team, and not just the back four. He revealed that there is a real togetherness amongst the Tottenham players and there is always someone who is ready to step in, if one commits a defensive mistake on the pitch.

The Belgian told Spurs TV: “Every defensive performance starts up front.

“They work so hard for us; the midfield also works hard for us. So, when they finally come to us, we are playing at a very good level as a defence.

“Even when they pass us, we have got Hugo [Lloris] or Michel [Vorm], who are playing well.

"When one makes a mistake, the other one picks it up; we always try to be there for each other and I think everyone has stepped up a level this season.”

Following their trip to Upton Park, Spurs could have the opportunity to almost end Arsenal’s title hopes when they host their north London rivals at White Hart Lane on Saturday.
