Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Wimmer admits that his side squandered an opportunity to go top of the table last night at West Ham, but has stressed that they will look to make amends on Saturday against Arsenal.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men would have gone top of the Premier League table had they bagged a win at Upton Park, but an early Michel Antonio goal was good enough to earn all three points for the Hammers.

It was Tottenham’s fourth defeat of the season, and while they still remain within touching distance of league leaders Leicester, Wimmer admits that they missed a big opportunity to lay down a title marker because of an under par performance.

Spurs will take on north London rivals Arsenal on Saturday at White Hart Lane, and with the opportunity to land a defining blow on the Gunners’ title aspirations, the Tottenham defender insisted that they will look to get back on track this weekend.

Wimmer told Spurs TV: “We didn’t play well tonight, and it’s disappointing because it was a big opportunity for us [to go top of the league table].

“We will give our best to turn it around on Saturday; we are still in a good position and of course it was a tough game for us tonight, but we have to fight on Saturday, it’s again a very difficult game for us.

“Hopefully we can turn it around and win on Saturday, as it is an important game.”

Arsenal’s defeat to Swansea last night meant Tottenham didn’t lose title ground to their north London rivals despite losing at West Ham.
