Steve Evans feels Leeds United Under-21 striker Eoghan Stokes is still not ready to make the step up into the first team.

The Irish Under-19 international has been garnering praise for his performances at Under-21 level and has become a regular face in the Leeds reserve team because of his consistent showing.

He recently earned words of praise from Leeds academy boss Paul Hart for his showing against Hull Under-21s and many feel he could soon earn a call from first team manager Evans.

However, despite his side’s struggles in front of goal, the Leeds manager feels the 19-year-old forward is still not ready for first team action and needs some more time to reach the required levels.

When asked whether he could opt to take a gamble by playing Stokes, Evans said in a press conference: “We are not in a position to take gambles.

“We need to win matches; the boy Stokes is getting goals, but when we watch him in training with the first team guys, he is some way below them.

“But he is a young man and we believe he possibly got a future [at Elland Road].”

Leeds are hoping that their star striker Chris Wood will return in action against Cardiff on Tuesday night, to give a much needed lift to the team who have been struggling to find the back of the net regularly.
