Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal admits that he considered strengthening his full-back options during the January transfer window.

The Red Devils have suffered a spate of injuries to key players over the last few months, but have been especially unlucky with their full-backs.

Luke Shaw suffered a serious knee injury in September, which almost ruled him out for the season; Antonio Valencia also suffered a serious ankle injury, with Marcos Rojo and Matteo Darmian also spending multiple spells on the sidelines.

There was speculation that Manchester United were looking at options to sign full-backs during the January transfer window, and Van Gaal confirmed that the club indeed lodged a few enquiries for players.

However, he chose to put his faith in Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and Guillermo Varela, the two young full-backs who have been impressive this season.

The Manchester United manager was quoted as saying by the BBC: "In January we took a risk at left-back.

“We inquired about lots of players, but said Borthwick-Jackson and Varela can do the job.”

The Dutchman also revealed that despite interest in Varela from Spain, the club decided to reject those offers.

“[There] was Spanish interest in Varela. We said no."
