Ex-Leeds United forward Noel Whelan has explained that the Whites should give their fans a “good send-off” this season by stringing together a few good results.

Steve Evans’ team beat Bolton Wanderers 2-1 in a Championship game at the weekend to put an end to their winless streak, which lasted five games in all competitions.

Leeds, who were knocked out of the FA Cup after losing 1-0 to Premier League outfit Watford last month, are also out of the race to finish the season in a playoff spot.

The Yorkshire giants presently find themselves 16th in the standings with 41 points from 34 games, 14 adrift of sixth-placed Sheffield Wednesday.

And with nothing much left to play for in the present campaign, Whelan wants Leeds to get the supporters excited for next season by going on a run.

“We need a consistent run of form and some good results under our belt to give the fans a good send-off from this season”, he wrote in his column in the Yorkshire Evening Post.

“It’s not been good enough and we have got to give them something to get their teeth into and to get excited about for the start of next season.”

Leeds will next take on seventh-placed Cardiff City in an away Championship fixture tomorrow.
