Newcastle United will decide on the future of under pressure manager Steve McClaren over the next 48 hours, it has been claimed.

With Newcastle second bottom in the Premier League there have been calls for McClaren to be sacked, calls which only grew louder following a weekend home defeat to Bournemouth.

But Newcastle are not rushing into making a decision over the future of the former FC Twente and Wolfsburg boss and according to the Press Association, the Magpies will consider McClaren's future over the next 48 hours.

There had been speculation McClaren had been sacked when his car left the training ground this morning, however it is claimed that was only the result of his driver heading out for a sandwich.

McClaren has vowed to fight on as he looks to rescue Newcastle's season, however the decision may soon be taken out of his hands by the club's board.

The former England manager was backed in the transfer market both last summer and in the recent winter window, but has failed to drive the Magpies up the Premier League table.

Newcastle have just 24 points from 28 games and are one point from safety, meaning if they win their game in hand they will climb out of the bottom three.
