Reading manager Paul Clement has revealed why he refused to wave at the Swansea City fans on his return to the Liberty Stadium on Saturday in the Championship.

Clement, who helped Swansea miraculously survive relegation from the Premier League at the end of the 2016/17 season, suffered a 2-0 defeat against his former club on Saturday.

Oli McBurnie bagged a brace as Reading dropped down to the relegation zone alongside fellow strugglers Hull City and Ipswich Town, piling the pressure on Royals boss Clement.

The Englishman did not enjoy his afternoon in Wales as he was on the receiving end of a lot of chanting when he refused to wave at the home fans.

Clement revealed the reason why he did not acknowledge his former fans by admitting that he felt it was inappropriate, while also suggesting that he was afraid of how they might react if he waved at them.

"I know the Swansea fans asked me to give them a wave, but I didn't think it was appropriate, and you never know what they might do if you wave to them you might get a bit of abuse back”, Clement was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"Then the song changed… predicting what was going to happen to me in the morning [by saying I’d be sacked in the morning] and then the Reading fans joined in.

"So there we go."

Reading are in desperate need of results and will next host 11th placed Bristol City at the Madejski Stadium on Saturday in the Championship.
