Liverpool legend Steve Nicol believes that there is every chance Mesut Ozil will be sold by Arsenal in the January transfer window after failing to impress Unai Emery.

Ozil was left out from the matchday squad that crashed out of the EFL Cup following their 2-0 defeat at the Emirates to rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday.

The German has rarely featured for Arsenal in recent weeks and it remains to be seen whether the Gunners are aiming to cut their losses on the highest-paid player in the squad.

Nicol thinks that Emery is sending a message with his treatment of Ozil and the likelihood is that the midfielder will go.

The former Reds defender also suggested that Emery has made his intentions clear and insisted the situation will only change if Ozil decides to leave the club in January.

“I think he [Ozil] is probably going to go in January”, Nicol said on ESPN FC.

“Arsenal are going to have to eat maybe half of his wages and Ozil will still go to a good side, but clearly Emery has sent a message.

“I’m surprised [with how Ozil is being excluded by Emery].

"There is no question that they have fallen out and he is making a statement, but I think he is making a statement to the players as well.

“’This is my team, this is how we do it. I don’t care who you are, what the name on the back of your jersey is, this is how we are going about it’.

“To be fair, the Arsenal players seem to have said ‘okay, that is fine with us’ and they are putting it in.

“The only way this [situation] changes is if Ozil leaves [in January].”

Ozil, who joined Arsenal from Real Madrid in 2013, has been restricted to just under 850 minutes of playing time in the Premier League so far this term.
