Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum is sure that the competition for places automatically gets the best out of the Reds first team players.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are unbeaten in the Premier League as they lead the rest of the teams in the league table, and have a deeper squad this time compared to previous seasons.

Wijnaldum has been a regular feature in the Reds' midfield this season, even though Klopp has the option of choosing from Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Fabinho and Naby Keita.

The former Newcastle United midfielder has started in all but one game for Reds so far and has admitted that the improved squad not only pushes the players to perform better, but it also impacts the competitiveness in training.

“It’s always good if you have competition in one position because that means you have to perform to stay in the team”, Wijnaldum told Liverpool’s official website.

“But I think that has to be normal at a club like Liverpool because it’s a top team, one of the biggest teams in England, so Liverpool will always sign good players and that means there will always be competition in the team."

“That makes players even better – not only because you have an ‘opponent’ in your position, but also because you play and train against good team-mates, so it makes you automatically a better player.”

Liverpool play a day before their closest rivals Manchester City, on Friday, and will hope to put the pressure on the reigning champions by opening up a four-point gap at the top of the table.
