Newcastle United have approached Napoli for the signature of Simone Verdi on a loan deal until the end of the season.

The 26-year-old forward joined Napoli from Bologna last summer, but injuries and form have relegated him to being a bit part player in Carlo Ancelotti’s squad this season.

Verdi has not played a single minute of league football since October and despite returning from an injury recently, he remained an unused substitute in Napoli’s last two league games.

The attacker is said to be considering an option to move away from Napoli in January in order to play regular football and he has attracted interest from the Premier League.

According to Italian daily Il Roma, Newcastle have touched base with Napoli and have proposed signing Verdi on a loan deal for the latter half of the season in January.

Rafael Benitez is looking to make additions to his squad in January and is hoping to use his connections with former club Napoli.

The Newcastle boss is again looking at another window of wheeling and dealing and signing Verdi on loan has emerged as an option for the club.

Newcastle want to improve their attack in the winter window and have made a move for Verdi early in order to get a deal over the line soon.
