Liverpool legend Ian Rush has insisted Danny Ings was fantastic during his time at Anfield, but admits he is better suited to Southampton due to their style of play.

Ings, who joined Liverpool from Burnley in the summer of 2015, struggled to make a lasting impact on Merseyside due to recurring injuries and lengthy layoffs.

The striker notched up just 25 appearances in all competitions during his time at Anfield and subsequently fell down the pecking order as things went from bad to worse for him.

However, Ings was presented with an opportunity to go out on loan at the beginning of this season and has given a good account of himself at Southampton.

The Englishman has netted seven goals, including three in his last three games, from 14 appearances in England’s top flight this term.

Despite struggling due to injuries at Anfield, Rush insisted that Ings was fantastic whenever he got an opportunity at Liverpool and hailed the striker for his abilities.

“Danny Ings, when he was at Liverpool, he was absolutely fantastic”, Rush said on beIN Sports on Thursday.

“He is most probably one of the best at playing off the shoulder of the defender.

"If you get the players in midfield to play around him, I will guarantee you that he will get in every position.

“He plays off the shoulder of the defender and he is absolutely excellent in those positions.”

However, Rush also admitted that Ings is much better suited to the way Southampton play when compared to Liverpool, who have gone on a different level.

“I think Liverpool have gone on to a different level to tell you the truth”, he continued.

“I think the way they play doesn’t suit Danny Ing; the way Southampton play suits Danny Ings.”

Ings, who is currently on loan at Southampton, will join the Saints permanently next season on a £20m fee that was agreed by both clubs in the summer.
