Chelsea legend Tommy Langley believes the Blues should comfortably beat their next opponents Southampton.

Maurizio Sarri’s side strengthened their position in the top four after a narrow 1-0 win against Crystal Palace on Sunday as an N’Golo Kante strike was enough for the Blues.

Chelsea will return to Stamford Bridge for their first game of 2019 against the Saints next Wednesday.

Southampton have picked up their form after the arrival of Ralph Hasenhuttl, but are still very much a work in progress and lost 3-1 against Manchester City on Sunday.

Langley believes the Saints did not have the best of outings against West Ham in midweek, and Chelsea should ease past Hasenhuttl’s side come Wednesday.

“Looking at them against West Ham in midweek and today in the first 15 minutes of that game, they are at sixes and sevens”, Langley said on Chelsea TV after the Blues' win against Crystal Palace.

“I don't think he knows his best team yet.

“He's only been there a week and a half, so I think it is a good time to be playing us and I see us claiming three points, quite comfortably."

Chelsea have won each of their last six games against Southampton, and will hope to start 2019 on a winning note.

The Blues currently have a five point-lead over fifth-placed Arsenal in the Premier League table heading into the new year.
