Liverpool legend John Barnes has criticised Yerry Mina for not being a team player after the Colombian was left out of Everton’s starting line-up in their Premier League defeat against Leicester City.

Mina joined Everton from Barcelona for big money, but has taken time to settle down as the Toffees have been inconsistent under new boss Marco Silva.

The centre-back's stock rose after an impressive World Cup campaign with Colombia in 2018, but Barcelona still chose to sell him.

Everton have kept just four clean sheets this season and Barnes feels Mina is a good player, but needs to adapt his game to gel with his team-mates and become more of a team player.

“Yerry Mina is one for me who is a good individual player, but he doesn’t work cohesively with his partner”, Barnes said on beIN SPORTS on New Year's Day.

“A centre-back pairing has got to work together. Pushing up together, dropping off together, covering each other.

“He’s a very good individual player, but I think he just plays whatever he sees, rather than playing as a back four unit or a back two unit, and that’s why he’s probably been left out.”

Mina has made nine appearances for Everton in the Premier League and had to wait until November to make his league debut as a foot injury stopped him from playing early on in the season.
